[ The adivasi of South India, after centuries of being invisible and being forcibly kept
under subjugation, are
slowly emerging from thraldom to claim their place under the sun. This book is the
process report of the adivasi
search for justice in South India, mainly the Nilgiri Biosphere in the 1990s, setting it off
in the international
and national perspective, tracing their history from the pre-independence, together with

waarin participatie centraal staat. ]

[ In the context of economic globalisation, the mandate to implement economic, social and cultural rights is the most
urgent. From the point of view of the human rights community, the primacy of human rights obligations over economic
policies has been reiterated on several occasions. This book presents the view that human dignity and human rights
need to be brought to the centre of the current debate on globalisation. Whereas human dignity is the core and the
foundation of human rights, it is protected through implementation of rights. ]

[ Protection of fundamental human rights has always been accorded a prominent place in the Indian Constitution.
However, most laws aimed at securing human rights have been hamstrung by tardy implementation. General apathy
towards human rights violations has also contributed to their persistent occurence. The essays in this book
evaluate the direction of human rights theory and practice in India from an interdisciplinary perspective. Issues
like rights of tribals, prisoners, refugees, feminist perspectives, the role of the media. ]
